The Top Urban Hikes in Los Angeles

One of the most popular activities in Los Angels is hiking. Makes sense because of our health-conscious culture and beautiful weather.

But another cool thing about living in LA is that if you are looking for a good hike you don’t necessarily have to drive very far to reach it.

In this article, we break down our list of urban hikes that are an excellent choice when you want to exercise and get out in the great outdoors without having to leave the city.

1 – Griffith Park

Griffith Park Hiking

Description:

Number one on our list is there for good reason.  The amazing Griffith Park is a massive public outdoor park packed with some of our cities’ best hiking options.

Located right in the city of Los Angeles in the neighborhood of Los Feliz, Griffith Park is easy to get to and there are many entrances and areas you can explore.

You can pick a trail towards Mount Hollywood, or Mount Lee for pictures near the Hollywood Sign.  You can also choose to walk towards the old abandoned LA zoo, the classic merry go round or step it up and walk all the way up to the Observatory, the choices are endless.

The Observatory in Griffith Park offers many free special events. One is called Sunset Walk and Talk and is a guided tour with a walk along the trails near the Observatory.

You can find out times by checking the Griffith Park Observatory Calendar.

2 – Runyon Canyon

Another great urban hiking choice and one of the most popular in the city is the famous Runyon Canyon.

Runyon offers you trails from 2 and 3 miles and even longer so you can get in all the outdoor exercise time you want with a bonus of spectacular views.

You can bring a dog with you on your hike to Runyon and there is even sections where they can be off-leash.

Of course, you want to pick up after them and take caution if you’re dog is aggressive towards other dogs or people.

3 – Silver Lake Reservoir

SilverLake Resevoir Hiking

Description:

Everyone loves to take a stroll around the artistic and hipster Silver Lake area in Los Angeles.  With its charming stores and laid back vibes, it makes for an inviting place for city walks, exercise, and urban hikes.

But one of the most popular places for a brisk walk is the Silver Lake reservoir. A quick jog around the reservoir is a relaxing way to burn some calories and it also provides great opportunities for birds (and people) watching.

This area is very family-friendly and a great option if you want to get out walking with kids. Even if you have stroller it’s pretty easy to jog with it.

4 – Baldwin Hills

Baldwin Hills Hiking

Description:

For outdoor workout enthusiasts in Culver City or nearby the undisputed king is the hike up to the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook.

At Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook State Park you can choose between climbing those steep, uneven stairs or up the winding dirt trail. You can also drive up to a parking lot but we leave that for our hack below.

Whether the stairs or the trail after the steep hike up the reward of spectacular views are waiting as a reward at the top.

Once you reach the top you can exercise more, or just meditate and relax in the tranquil area at the peak.

hack:

If the steep hike up is a little much for you there is another option. Instead of parking on the street below and hiking up, you can actually drive to the top and park there.

You can then hike partially down and back up to match the effort level you want to put in. There is a $2 an hour fee to park at the top which is near the Visitors Center.

5 – Los Liones Trail

Los Liones Trail Hiking

Description:

This magnificent trail will revive your spirit, not only for the exercise but also for nature all around, which includes wildflowers, bird watching, and breathtaking views of the ocean.

Los Liones Trail is located near the Pacific Palisades and is considered a moderate hike but not a ton of shade so make sure to bring your sunscreen, water bottle, and a hat.

hack:

This is a heavily trafficked and popular trail. If you want to have a really good experience we recommend you go early in the morning when it’s not as crowded as the afternoons.

Not only will it be less congested you will have fewer worries about the heat and sun.
