That “Other” Beach City – Hacking El Segundo

When it comes to beach towns in the South Bay El Segundo is often overlooked. After all its pretty hard to compete with the very popular Redondo, Hermosa and Manhattan beach trifecta.

But be sure you don’t stop your exploring at Manhattan because their little neighbor El Segundo has some cool little gems as well ready to entertain everyone!

In this post we take a closer look at what this beach city has to offer, including the events presented at the Old Town Music Hall, some cool murals to take memorable pics, and stops at some awesome museums.

Also we look at some great shopping destinations and where to grab some tasty beer. And finally learn about the cool beaches and parks where you can bring your family and have a great time.

1 – El Segundo Beaches

Description:

El Segundo beach offers an alternative for those looking for a spot to post up in the sand that is way less crowded than most other beaches in Los Angeles.  On the South side of the beach you can see the north edge of Manhattan and its a nice peaceful walk towards beautiful Porto Beach.

Although this beach is beautiful, be aware it is right near an oil refinery, displaying some tall, ugly smoke stacks. But if you enjoy smaller crowds, beautiful sunshine, rolling waves, turn your eyes towards the sand and take in those incredible Ocean views.

2 – El Segundo Breweries

Description:

Breweries are super popular in Los Angeles and you can find some of the best right there in el Segundo.  Breweries are not only fun because we get to taste some damn good artisan beers, but also it gives us a chance to connect more with others in a laid back, casual environment.

Nothing better than a nice brew, sunshine and conversation with friends! And that is especially true when you have the Ocean just steps or blocks away from where you are enjoying your cold one.

El Segundo has so many great breweries where you can enjoy some great tasting premium ales and lagers, but here is a list of some cant miss favorites from us.

3 – El Segundo Shopping

Description:

El Segundo has tons of amazing local eateries and shopping centers with tons of great restaurants.  But one stands out above the others and that is The Point; one of the best shopping destinations in the South Bay, if not all of Los Angeles.

The Point has a huge outdoor shopping and dining space with curated upscale boutiques, bars, restaurants and dessert shops. They also use that beautiful massive outdoor space to host events such as outdoor yoga and small concerts.    We love that they are brining back their Summer Concert Series in 2021 called Sounds of Summer. It will be every Wednesday from 6-8pm from July until September.

Near The Point, on Rosecrans Ave.  there are even more restaurants, bars and hotels where you can stop by after strolling around or shopping at The Point.

Some spots that stand out include the popular Paul Martin’s American Grill, which has been mentioned in several magazines for using locally organic produce and meat raised in humane and wholesome way.  We also enjoy Nomad Eatery, Philz Coffee, Randys Donuts and Calo Kitchen Tequila.

4 – El Segundo Parks

Description:

El Segundo has so many family friendly places to visit and that also include its beautiful parks. One of our favorites is Recreation Park because of all the amenities. You can play volleyball, tennis, softball and even ping-pong at this park!

One of the main benefits of El Segundo is its proximity to LAX. Not only does that make it a convenient stop for out of towners but nearby Clutter’s Park gives you a lookout point of the airport which is probably the closest you can get without actually being inside the airport.  Many kids and grown ups like ‘plane spotting’ which is watching airplanes taking off and landing close up.

Another great park to visit in el Segundo is Memory Tree Row which offers great scenic views.  It is home to more than 300 trees and is right on the edge of El Segundo.

And last but not least we recommend Library Park, this place is popular for events such summer concerts, it has a large grassy area, a gazebo, and it’s right next to the Library.

5 – El Segundo Entertainment

Description:

You can stroll around el Segundo and come across many gems. One is the John Van Hamersveld Mural, which is a tribute to the city of El Segundo from the artist. If you love murals its a great spot to snap a picture.

Another pretty awesome mural to take cool pics is the Spirit of Aerospace, it stretches more than 3 stories high and 118 feet wide. A couple of other cool mural suggestions include Flying or Falling II mural, and Handprint Alley mural.

Do you know a car enthusiast? If yes, we definitely recommend as visit to the Automobile Driving Museum, as this is one of el Segundo’s top highlights.  And if you’re a fan of classic cars they have over 130 vintage and collectable cars onsite!

Looking for other entertainment in el Segundo you can catch a movie at one of the local theaters, or a game at the Toyota Sports Performance Center, a practice facility for the LA Kings and LA Sparks.  If you want some culture you can visit El Segundo Museum of Art and enjoy the rotating collection of modern art or take a class.  Admission to the museum is free.

El Segundo also takes pride of its Old Town Music Hall which has been a landmark since the late 60s.  The historic theater hosts regular showings of iconic silent films.  Live musicians play the theater’s famous 1925 Wurlitzer organ. Other events include vintage comedy festivals and live jazz performances by contemporary musicians.
