Best Places in Los Angeles to Catch a Sunset

It is no secret that Los Angeles is known for having many many beautiful places to catch a spectacular sunset.  We asked many of our friends who are photographers, event coordinators, and outdoor yoga teachers and they all agreed that despite a little smog you can still catch some pretty striking views of gorgeous sunsets in our beloved city.

We put this list together for you and we hope that you enjoy the places to catch a beautiful sunset in LA as much as we do!

1 – Griffith Observatory

Griffith Park Observatory Sunset

Description:

The City of Los Angeles has many spectacular spots to watch the sunset but no list would be complete without the crown jewel Griffith Observatory.

Because of its elevated location amongst the hills and hiking trails and the gorgeous architecture of the Observatory behind you, the view of the sun setting here is mesmerizing.

It’s a great choice for just about anyone and any situation so you can go alone, take some kids or even that special someone for a romantic date.

Due to the 2020 pandemic, the actual observatory is temporarily closed as of this writing. But if you are there just to see the sunset that actually helps because there should be fewer people and you may even snag a parking spot at the top lot.

2 – El Matador State Beach

el Matador State Beach Sunset

Description:

Take Instagram worthy pictures at one of the most beautiful places in all of Southern California.  El Matador Beach in Malibu, with its stunning sea caves and rock formations, has stolen the heart of many locals and visitors while combining ocean views with a gorgeous sunset.

It can get pretty dark after sunset so the best is to go with plenty of time and stay until you get that shot of nature’s most beautiful gifts and leave soon after.

You will still hear people call this Beach “a secret”. Don’t buy into that nonsense as its been pretty well known now since 2012 or so.  It can get crowded and parking is limited so be sure to plan accordingly.

3 – Spire73

Spire73 Sunset

Description:

Some of the best places to catch a sunset in Los Angeles are rooftop bars. We have some really great ones but if you really want to step it up be sure to watch a sunset with a cocktail in hand at Spire73.

This open-air bar located on the 73rd floor of the Intercontinental Hotel in Downtown LA is the tallest one in the Western Hemisphere and has some stunning views of the city and sunsets.

Spire 73 is also pretty pricey with a fee just to enter let alone the price of food and drinks. But it is an amazing experience so maybe mark it down for a special occasion.

As of this writing in 2020 Spire73 is temporarily closed due to social distancing guidelines but we included it anyway because as soon as it is safe to open, this marvelous bar will delight everyone again with its luxurious vibes, delicious cocktails, and stunning sunset views.

4 – Point Vicente in Palos Verdes

Point Vicente Sunset

Description:

If you love hiking, chances are you have made the long drive out to hit the trails in Palos Verdes.  This area has some of the best Ocean and cliff view trails you can find and offers all levels of difficulty from mild to very challenging.

Watching the sunset in the cliffs of Palos Verdes with the Ocean below will definitely give you even more appreciation for the beauty we all get to enjoy in Southern California.

Because of all the open air, dozens of trails, and hills you should be able to safely find a good spot to take a break for some pictures, relaxing and just enjoying the view.

One of our favorite places to hike over here is Terrena Resort. Even though it’s an expensive resort for guests, its grounds intersect with the winding public trails above the Ocean. So you can get the same views tourists are paying a premium for completely gratis.

5 – Ascot Hills Park

Ascot Hills Park Sunset

Description:

Some of the best sunset views you can find in our city are from our beautiful parks. And Ascot Hills Park in East Los Angeles really stands out with its 96 acres of trails and spectacular views of DTLA.

The hike is roughly an hour so an excellent choice for evening exercise that you can finish with a sunset view.

Then grab dinner to go at one of many nearby recommended spots.

After the Sun sets make sure to stick around for it to get complely dark for another bonus treat. Because you can then enjoy the beautiful city lights of DTLA as it illuminates the park from your epic view.
